Early West Series

This series of four paintings was created for the Early West Show at the Solomon Dubnick Gallery in 2004. Prior to this show I had a fascination with pioneers, cowboys, indians, and this period of time. However, I never thought of it as being potential painting material.

I chose to create work that focused on toys and icons of the period as a way of representing how distant and surreal that time seems to me now. How could that have existed only 150 years ago…it seems as distant as Alice’s Wonderland.
